One of the greatest Gothic horror fiction novels, Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891) is about the portait that the artist, Basil Hallward, paints of the beautiful young man Dorian Gray.

Like Narcissus, Dorian falls in love with his painting and wishes that he could always stay as young as he is in the picture.

And his wish comes true! Dorian stays young, but the face in the picture grows older. So old in fact that Dorian can’t bear to look at it... And this leads to evil, sin and finally murder!
